President Remengesau Proposes Legislation Amendments to Initiate National and International Clean Energy Goals
On January 23rd, President Tommy E. Remengesau, Jr. transmitted a proposed legislation to the 10th Olbiil Era Kelulau seeking to harmonize existing laws concerning the Republic’s energy operation. The amendments proposed are based on the recommendations made by the Palau National Energy Committee following the Palau Energy Summit held in August 2017.
“The purpose of the Palau Energy Summit was to find a way to achieve our goals under the Paris Climate Agreement: to achieve a 22% greenhouse gas emissions reduction; to generate at least 45% of our energy from renewable sources; and to significantly increase energy efficiency,” stated President Remengesau. He further expressed these amendments serve as an important first step to reconcile and harmonize existing laws, clarifying roles and authorities of the Palau Public Utilities Corporation (PPUC) and the Palau Energy Administration, as well as balance the incentive to accelerate deployment of rooftop solar panels, and most importantly, put the nation in a strategic position to accomplish its national and international clean energy goals.
