Outcome of the 2017 Palau Energy Summit
The Republic of Palau successfully hosted the first ever Palau Energy Summit themed “Renewable and Efficient Energy, Powering the Future We Want” from August 7-10 at the Ngarachamayong Cultural Center in Koror, Palau.
Over three days of discussion and deliberation, three working groups comprising of members of the 10th Olbiil Era Kelulau, State Governors, national government officials, agency representatives, including Palau Public Utilities Corporation and Palau Energy Administration authorities and international technical advisors such as the EarthJustice, Okeanos Foundation, GridMarket, International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the U.S. Department of Energy, EarthX, the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) and other relevant agencies gathered together to share ideas and to effectively produce an action plan to assist the Republic of Palau in meeting its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) target of generating 45% renewable energy by year 2025.
The Summit attendees successfully produced and presented its “Summit Findings and Action Plan” to President Tommy E. Remengesau, Jr. and leadership of Palau.
Following the conclusion of the Summit, President Remengesau signed Executive Order No. 403 establishing the Palau National Energy Committee to monitor and guide all national renewable energy efforts.
As a result of this Summit, the Republic of Palau also successfully formed partnerships with reputable international organizations to further its renewable energy goals.
On August 10th, the Republic of Palau entered into a partnership with EarthX and GridMarket, who announced their commitment to assist Palau in transitioning to a low cost, carbon-free future.
Furthermore, the Republic of Palau also entered into an agreement with the Okeanos Foundation for the Sea, who are committed to provide Palau with a modernized traditional double hulled open ocean canoe called Vaka Motu by the summer of 2018.
