Office of the President Reviews Applications of Candidates for Special Prosecutor
The Office of the President has made some significant progress in seeking a Special Prosecutor for the Republic of Palau. Since the Special Prosecutor position vacancy was announced on April 20, 2018, the Office of the President has received numerous interested applicants and has conducted multiple rounds of interviews with a number of qualified applicants.
The solicitation for the Special Prosecutor position was widely received globally including the Pacific Region and the United States through postings on Prosecutor Council boards, Public Service Attorney Job boards, and the U.S. National District Attorneys Association announcement board.
President Tommy E. Remengesau is currently reviewing the applications of strong candidates for the position maintaining the importance of hiring a Special Prosecutor who has a strong academic background and a demonstrated ability to produce high quality written work that must be able to work effectively with a diverse team and be able to analyze complex legal issues. Moreover, President Remengesau is looking to appoint a candidate that will commit to the full term of the position.
The Special Prosecutor position is filled by an appointment process. A candidate for Special Prosecutor is appointed by the President of the Republic of Palau, confirmed by the Senate of the Palau National Congress and, once appointed, subject only to for-cause removal by the President. The Special Prosecutor is expected to serve a term of five years.
